Ear wax is produced naturally in our ears in order to keep dust and bugs away from our eardrums and protect our hearing mechanisms from infections. Wax is produced continuously throughout our lives and is excreted naturally, bringing with it the unwanted material which we wash away when we bathe.
Sometimes this excretion system slows down, and we are left with an excess of wax in our ears which can be difficult to remove.
Traditionally this was removed using syringing: a blast of water forced into the ear canal to bring out the stubborn wax. This is still in use in some areas but is becoming less popular due to side effects which can sometimes arise.

Micro-Suction Method
The modern method of ear wax removal is micro-suction. This is a much gentler method which uses a vacuum to suck out the excess wax without the need for water and all the mess that can result from the old method. With micro-suction, the audiologist can pinpoint the exact location of the wax and remove it gradually and gently, thereby reducing the possibility of discomfort.

Background Noise
We’ve all know what it’s like when we go into a noisy environment and have to work hard to follow the conversation. Whether it’s in a pub, restaurant or family gathering, the noise from conversations we don’t want to hear makes it difficult to hear what we want to hear.
Similar problems arise when we are watching television. It we’re watching the news it’s fairly easy. There is one person speaking and no distraction from sounds in the background.
Most people with hearing difficulties will have lost more in the high frequencies. Unfortunately, it’s the high frequencies that provide clarity and tell us what the words are. A lot of people will say things like ‘I can hear people speaking, I just can’t make out what they’re saying’ or ‘everyone seems to mumble these days’.
Whilst it’s mostly the high frequencies that are damaged, the low frequencies are relatively healthy. Low frequencies are strong and travel further. We’ve all walked past a pub and heard the boom boom of music from the low frequencies passing through the walls. The weaker high frequencies don’t travel very far. So when we’re in noisy situations, the parts of distant conversations that each us are the low frequencies which we can hear more easily than the high frequencies of the nearer conversation that we’re trying to hear.
Modern hearing aids are programmed according to your test results to give you the right amount of amplification where you need it; more for the high frequencies, less for the lows. More detailed programming, achieved through a proper understanding of your particular difficulties, will enable you to get the best from your hearing in all situations.
